June 2018 will be one of those months I’ll remember for a wee while, but it won’t be for great race results. I go two great new event locations which were both awesome, and I’m going to say I did some growing as a runner.
A Single Double Rainbow
As one of the great philosopher of our time wisely said “You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away and know when to run.” Confronted with the 17-25km course split at the Double Rainbow event these wise words were front of mind. Swim, Run, Repeat
I don’t think there are enough superlatives to accuracy capture the experience of the inaugural Breca Bay of Islands swimrun. The label stated 25km of running and 8.4km of swimming, island hopping the iconic Bay of Islands, with adjectives like pristine, challenging, technical, and beauty. Oh boy did it have all that. Isn’t It Spelt Gesundheit?
I don’t think anyone was quite prepared for what Shaun had planned at Atiu Creek Farm and dubbed The Gazuntite.
New and Interesting Places
It’s funny how you can grow up in an area and never really see it all, and this was certainly the case of Total Sport’s Coastal Challenge. Many summer days were spent at the beaches along the North Shore of Auckland, however running between them was just not something we did. So it was high time I changed that. After a Long Break, a Long Post.
What a start to the year, work and life have been next level crazy busy so I’ve been a bit slack on getting a blog post out since Raglan. Quite a few people that I’ve run into lately have asked if I’d given up on my blogs or what my plans for the year are. While it would have been more appropriate a month ago, because that’s when these things are done, here are my goals for this year.
“Farmland, bush, mud, roots, rocks, ladders, chains, ropes, pain”. With a course description reading more like a chapter of 50 Shades of Grey than a running race, the Raglan Karioi Trail event certainly lets you know early on you’re in for a challenge that will be something completely different.
Guess I’m an Ultra runner now.
-Start line of the 2017 Tarawera 50km Ultramarathon Race –
Yup, that’s me. Now you’re probably wondering how I got here… Continue reading “Guess I’m an Ultra runner now.”
So Close To Going Far
Oh my, oh my, the 11th of November is only a few weeks away, and that means toeing the line for 50kms of fun. This meant that labour weekend was to be my peak/hell week with back to back to back long runs planned, with the filling of the long run sandwich being the Total Sport Waihi event. But as with any well laid plan, it all went to hell in a hand bag. Continue reading “So Close To Going Far”
Hills and Hail
The hills of Hunua was where the final event in the Xterra series took place and boy was it a stunning day. Stunning how the weather changed over the 4 hours it took me to complete the 23km. It was like playing weather bingo. Continue reading “Hills and Hail”
